The Bath And A Small Good Thing - 1746 Words

Raymond Carver’s short stories The Bath and A Small Good Thing seem to follow the same pattern, but both versions are written in a different way and to different ends. The pattern used allows the reader to create a variety of experiences and different perspectives of both storylines. In both stories, the central plot and most of the details remain the same. The language in The Bath is vague and has a more sympathetic feeling on the reader whereas A Small Good Thing goes deeper into the development of the characters and the storyline. I could not help but notice a lack of compassion from the characters in The Bath; however, in A Small Good Thing, the characters seem to exhibit more compassion and understanding for each other. While both stories have similarities and differences, each has its own magical effect upon the reader. The family structure is made up of a mother, a father, and a son. In the beginning of both stories, the mother is ordering the son a cake for his coming up birthday party. One notices the similarities in the opening right away when the mother picks a cake she knows her son will love and tells the baker to put the name, SCOTTY, in green icing beneath the planet (Carver, 47 ASGT). Both stories jump ahead to the day of Scotty’s birthday, when an accident takes place. As Scotty is walking to school, he is hit by a car and winds up in the hospital. As would be expected, the mother is most of the time by the boy’s bedside.
